Congratulatory messages on the occasion of the national holiday

On the 31st anniversary of the proclamation of the Romanian language, the country's leadership sent congratulatory messages to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, mentioning that the Romanian language must be preserved, honest and spoken with pride.

"May the mother tongue, the language of our people be cultivated, cherished and studied with love and piety. And let every inhabitant of the land know it well. I will remember what I said in other years: let us be proud that we speak one of the most beautiful languages in the world. Whether we call it Moldovan (as most Moldovans prefer), or we call it Romanian (as many other fellow citizens prefer) - it is the same language and it is ours. We must not divide the language that actually unites us. Let us mark the National Day of Our Language, including through this quality of language, let us take advantage of the wisdom and power of fair, balanced, productive dialogue. In this way, we will glorify not only the native language, but also the temperate and serene character of our people," the president's message reads.

In her turn, the President of the Parliament, Zinaida Greceanii, specified that "it is a holiday that offers every citizen the opportunity to solemnly honor the mother tongue as an important part of its identity and culture".

"Moldova can indeed be proud of a beautiful diversity of languages. In our country, all citizens, regardless of ethnicity, can enjoy the sacred right to speak, read and think in their own language. Respect for this right is a commitment of the leadership of the Republic of Moldova, because it is so civilized and humane. Cultural and linguistic diversity is the business card of the Republic of Moldova. Therefore, Our Language is also the celebration of peace, solidarity and dignity of all citizens of the Republic of Moldova," mentioned Zinaida Greceanii.

TRM.MD recalls that, on December 5, 2013, the Constitutional Court in Chisinau adopted a historic decision, which established that the Romanian language is officially spoken in the Republic of Moldova.
