The president of the SCM could also be elected by members who are not judges

The Parliament approved, in today's plenary session, the draft law for the amendment of article 5 of the Law on the Superior Council of Magistracy (SCM), in the second reading. The modification refers to the possibility of electing the president of the SCM, including from among the members who are not judges.

The legislative initiative belongs to the President of the Republic of Moldova Igor Dodon, and the conditions that imposed the elaboration of the project are crowned by the Urgent Joint Opinion of the Venice Commission and the Human Rights Directorate of the General Directorate for Human Rights and the Rule of Law of the Council of Europe.

Thus, the opportunity of the draft law lies in adjusting the concept of electing the president of the SCM in accordance with international standards.
