Orthodox Christians celebrate today the White Sunday

Orthodox Christians celebrate today, June 16, the White Sunday, also called the Pentecost. White Sunday is a feast dedicated to the vegetation of the earth, life-giving nature. For the Christian Church, the White Sunday or Troitza means the Descent of the Holy Spirit, an event that took place fifty days after Easter.

Characteristic for the White Sunday is the adornment with the green branches of linden, willow, walnut, ash, the pillars from the gates, doors and windows of the house and icons.

It remains the tradition that on this day the children will be sent to gather common mullein, thyme, flowers that are laid in the whole house. Some twigs are taken to the church and sanctified, and then they are carefully guarded at the icons, from where they are taken and thrown into the yard, especially when it is raining with hail. Therefore, the decoration of the households with greenery (leaves) symbolizes the fertility of the plants and the hearth of the village and of each household in part against Pentecost, writes moldovenii.md.

Also on this day, in some villages it is customary to clean the fountains and springs. This custom, after the Holy Trinity, was recorded during the flowering of roses (Rosa) and was called Rosalia. Hence the tradition of purifying fountains and springs - as a call to renewal, to purity with the Descent of the Holy Spirit.

Another basic feature of this Sunday is the commemoration of the dead at the church.
