Cochlear implant interventions in children will continue next year

To hear means to be happy. In the last week alone, seven children from the Republic of Moldova received a chance at a normal life, after they received cochlear implants. The little ones were operated on by a team of doctors from the "Emilian Coţaga" Children's Hospital in the capital, assisted by a teacher from the Czech Republic. The youngest beneficiary is two years and four months old, and the oldest - five years old, reports Moldova 1.

The Cochlear implant is implanted after the patient's ear and completely restores the function of the inner ear, doctors say.

By the end of the year, through the state program, three more children out of the 20 planned will be operated.

"Unfortunately, even in the last few weeks, children with the same degree of deafness have appeared. We will work together, we will work side by side to adapt these children in society," said Vasile Tomuz, the director of the “Emilian Coţaga" Hospital.

The device plus its implant costs about 20 thousand euros. Since last year, in our country, expenses are covered by compulsory health insurance funds. For 2020, for the purchase of these devices, the state has allocated almost eight million lei.

"We have the support offered by the Romanian side, by the Czech Republic, to carry out this program in Moldova as well, so that our children can benefit from this implant. For next year, we intend to have absolutely all the children who are waiting for this implant to benefit from it," mentioned the Minister of Health, Labor and Social Protection, Viorica Dumbrăveanu.

During the last three years, 36 children benefited from cochlear implants in Moldova, 19 of which were procured from donations. The youngest beneficiary was 11 months old, and the oldest - seven years and five months old.
