Tens of thousands of people protest in Prague for the resignation of the prime minister

Tens of thousands of people protested in Prague on Tuesday to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Andrej Babis in one of the largest demonstrations organized in the Czech Republic since the fall of the communist regime, reports the Dpa agency, quoted by Mediafax.

The organizers of the event estimated that around 120,000 people participated in the protests. The demonstrations were held in Wenceslas Square, the place where the great protests during the 1989 Velvet Revolution took place.

Protesters fear that the new Justice Minister could compromise the judiciary exactly when prosecutors are to decide whether to blame Premier Andrej Babis in a European fraud investigation. Prime Minister Babis denied having committed illegal deeds.

The Czech Republic could lose European funds in the context of the European Commission's finding that Prime Minister Andrej Babis is in a situation of conflict of interest due to asset-based businesses.

If confirmed in subsequent proceedings, the conclusions could lead to the loss of the European Union's funds to the agriculture, chemical, food, media and health sectors through projects launched in 2018 by the Czech Republic.
