The Peruvian parliament has voted in favor of the removal of the president

Peru's parliament voted on Friday to launch the procedure for ousting President Martin Vizcarra, following which he could be removed from office on "moral incompetence", writes Agerpres.

In the parliamentary vote on the impeachment process, 65 MPs voted in favor, 36 against and 24 abstained.

President Martin Vizcarra is suspected of asking his advisers to lie in a parliamentary inquiry. The case focuses on a controversial contract with a singer worth $ 50,000.

The president described the impeachment in his case as "a conspiracy against democracy". He will now have to publicly prove his innocence within ten days.

Vizcarra replaced the prime minister and several other ministers in mid-July after the high number of COVID-19 cases and the economic crisis affected his popularity.

Peru's GDP fell by 30% in the second quarter of 2020.

Vizcarra called early presidential and parliamentary elections in April 2021.
