WHO: The British version of Coronavirus is present in at least 60 countries and territories

The Coronavirus variant found in the UK continues to spread around the world and was present last week in 60 countries and territories, 10 more than on January 12, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday, reports AFP.

The South African variant, which like the British one is much more contagious, is spreading more slowly and is present in 23 countries and territories, three more than on January 12, the WHO said in its weekly epidemiological analysis.

The WHO also said it was monitoring the spread of two other variants that appeared in Brazil, one of which, P1, was detected in Japan in four people arriving from South America.

"Currently, there is little information available to determine whether transmissibility or severity is altered by these new variants," the UN agency said, noting that some of the similar genetic traits require further study.

The British variant reported by WHO in mid-December is considered 50-70% more contagious than the original Coronavirus and is present in the six geographical areas of the WHO, while the South African variant is present in only four of them, WHO pointed out without specifying in which of them.

These two, more contagious variants are not a priori more dangerous, according to research conducted so far, but by making more people sick more easily, they increase the pressure on health systems, which in some countries, such as the United Kingdom and The United States sometimes collapses.

The COVID-19 pandemic has already caused more than two million deaths. The WHO notes that the number of deaths increased by 9% during the week ending January 17, compared to the previous week, reaching a record 93,000 deaths.
