Greece introduces new restrictions to fight the new Coronavirus

Greece extends lockdown to fight COVID-19 epidemic until March 16 and introduces new restrictions. Germany has also announced that it will not abandon the quarantine until March 28, but will relax some measures. Poland is facing a doubling of the number of new infections, and a region of the Czech Republic has entered a state of hospital emergency. Overseas, however, many US states have eliminated restrictions imposed in the health context, informs Moldova 1.

As of today, night traffic is prohibited in the metropolitan region of Athens and Thessaloniki. Sports activities are suspended, there will be no weddings, baptisms or memorials, and services can be held without believers. Schools will be closed where the epidemiological situation is very serious.

"We are going through the hardest part of this pandemic. At the pace of the new hospitalizations, the health system is exceeding its infrastructure and staffing limits," said Vassilis Kikilias, Greece's health minister.

After more than nine hours of negotiations, the German chancellor and the leaders of the 16 states decided to extend the lockdown until March 28, and under pressure from public opinion and her own government, Angela Merkel also accepted a gradual easing of restrictions. Private meetings between two households have been allowed again since Monday. After the schools and hairdressers were gradually opened, the turn of bookstores, florists and shops arrived.

"The spring of 2021 is different from last year and that's because we already have vaccines and the full range of tests. We intend to offer citizens the opportunity to take free rapid tests, at least one test per week," said Angela Merkel, Germany's chancellor.

The Czech Republic is at the limit of its capacity to care for COVID patients. One region has instituted a state of hospital emergency, which means doctors are giving priority to serious cases.

"We no longer have beds at ATI, beds with fans. That is, the beds will be used only for very serious patients," specifies Tomas Gottvald, hospital director.

There is also a crisis in hospital beds in Poland, so temporary COVID units will be opened. At the same time, a Polish biotechnology company signed an agreement to produce an anti-COVID vaccine with the Americans at Novavax.

"Poland intends to increase health security this year and in the future," said Pawel Borys, PFR's executive director.

Italy also wants to produce its own COVID vaccine. In the first phase, it is tested on 80 people, in the second - on 200. At the same time, the authorities announced that they are closing the schools in the red zones. In the Peninsula, around 15,000 cases are registered daily, most of them are infections with the British strain.

Across the ocean, many states are relinquishing restrictions, although experts are talking about the fourth wave. The tone was set by Texas, where wearing a mask is no longer mandatory, and shops and restaurants have opened to full capacity.
