COVID-19: Russia faces a new wave of contamination, almost 90% of new cases are the "Delta" variant

The "Delta" variant of coronavirus has become dominant in Moscow, almost 90% of new cases are with this strain. Thus, the authorities imposed harsh measures. Russia is facing a new wave of contamination, the daily balance of diseases nears 18 thousand. The Delta variant has been detected so far in 80 countries and continues to spread rapidly, Moldova 1 reports.

Since the beginning of the month, the infection rate has risen sharply in Moscow, and Mayor Sergei Sobianin has announced compulsory vaccination for education, healthcare staff.  Those who refuse are sent home, and companies that do not comply with the measure will be fined with up to 1 million rubles. Bars and restaurants remain closed in the Russian capital, and events with more than 1,000 spectators have been temporarily banned.

"In the last two days, the mortality rate has increased by 14%. Since December last year, I have witnessed a significant decrease. In order to avoid all this, you must protect yourself and your loved ones ", Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova came with an appeal to the population.

The "Delta" variant of the coronavirus has almost doubled the number of people hospitalized in the UK. Restrictions are maintained and people are still urged to get vaccinated.

"You don't have to make any appointments, go and get vaccinated at the nearest center. If you don't get vaccinated, we won't be able to reopen on July 19, "the Delta version has spread rapidly," said London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Brazil, the second most hit country by COVID-19 after the United States, has exceeded 500,000 dead. Experts are concerned about the slow pace of the vaccination campaign, the spread of more aggressive variants and the lack of preventive measures by President Jair Bolsonaro.
