Dairy products' prices could rise

After fuels and bakery products, dairy products may also become more expensive. Several dairy producers in the north and south of the country claim the surprising rise in feed prices, although 2021 has been a fruitful one. Producers also anticipate an increase in natural gas tariffs, which, in their opinion, could also lead to higher dairy prices, Moldova 1 reports.

One of Comrat's largest dairy producers admits that prices could rise if gas and raw materials become more expensive.

"We will keep the current prices as long as we can, because they are still essential dairy products.  However, prices will rise, especially if the gas tariff increases.  We keep up, we don't have enough products, we have a very high demand," said Maria Acbaş, administrator at a dairy company.

The inhabitants of Comrat treat with reservations the possible price increases and find that the increase in prices targets more and more products.  The most affected by price increases are retirees.

Even more producers in the north of the country, but also in the capital, say that they are currently monitoring the raw material market and, in case of need, they will also have to increase the price of dairy products.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment, prices can only be regulated for government-controlled products, such as 2.5% fat milk, up to 1% fat kefir or 5% fat cow's cheese.

"The increase in dairy products should be conditioned by the increase in the purchase price of raw materials paid to animal breeders, because the latter incur double the costs compared to last year to produce milk," said Valentin Rosca, head of the Ministry  Agriculture.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in August, chicken eggs also became more expensive, by almost 9.7%.

In the last month of summer, prices rose by almost five percent from a year ago.

According to NBS data, the price of non-food products increased by almost 7%.  The biggest increases are in flowers, it is an increase of almost 14,%.  Last month, the price of clothing also increased, there was an increase of just over 11% in suits, jackets, dresses, jackets, children's vests, and in the case of shoes - by almost nine percent.  There was also an increase in the price of computers, by about 5%, and of coal by just over four percent.

And prices for some food products have risen.  In the markets, they were sold by almost five percent more than in August 2020. The price of cucumbers increased last month by about 44 percent, chicken eggs became more expensive by almost ten percent, fresh mushrooms and citrus slightly  over 8% and 7%, respectively, and grapes - by almost 6%.

However, according to the National Bank, the price of some products fell.  Fruits and vegetables have become cheaper.  For example, the price of a kilogram of water melons and melons fell by half compared to July, potatoes fell by more than 14 percent and fruits by more than 13%.  At the same time, price reductions of over 4% were registered for air passenger transport services, and in the case of hotels and accommodation services the tariffs were reduced by only one percent.
