Renovation and upgrading of the Bulboaca polygon goes according to plan

Renovation and upgrading of the Bulboaca polygon follows the plan. Defense Minister Eugen Sturza, together with US Ambassador to Moldova Dereck J. Hogan, paid a visit to the Military Training Center of the National Army to assess the process of reconstruction and modernization of the military polygon, renovated under the "Global Initiative for Peacekeeping Operations" (GPOI), funded by the US Government.

Officials visited the buildings under renovation and construction - barracks, canteens, sanitary blocks, medical point, conference room, study and simulation classes, multipurpose targets field, shooting, as well as storage facilities for material goods.

Eugen Sturza said at the end of the visit that he was pleased with the way the repair and reconstruction of the buildings are to be commissioned this summer.

Minister Sturza added that thanks to the GPOI program, hundreds of soldiers will benefit from modern work and training conditions, which will contribute to better training necessary for participation in international peacekeeping operations.

The GPOI was founded in 2004, representing the US contribution to the G8 Action Plan to expand international peacekeeping operations. From 1997 until now, under the GPOI program and other previous projects, military has been trained in over 53 countries.

The Republic of Moldova joined the GPOI program in 2012 to improve training conditions for National Army deployed military personnel in external peacekeeping missions. The program foresees the modernization of the Military Training Center of the National Army.

The National Army has been participating in international peacekeeping missions since 1997. So far, some 700 officers and non-commissioned officers in Iraq, Liberia, Sudan, South Sudan, Côte d'Ivoire, Central African Republic, Mali, Georgia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and Kosovo.
