More than 20,000 students are studying at Health Education Schools

It's easier to prevent than to treat. This is the opinion of the students and teachers of the schools in Orhei, Rezina, Falesti, Cahul and Chisinau, where Education for Health is being studied. Thousands of students now find things that were previously taboo about sexual life, contraceptive methods or abortion, reports Moldova 1.

Students who study optional discipline say that classes help them to get to know their body better, but also to avoid risk factors.

"We have learned that we need to hydrate ourselves, that the body has enough water, eat fruits and vegetables to have a healthy body and not eat chips, carbonated water that is harmful to the body," said Daniela Savenco, a student, the village of Borceag, Cahul.

Parents say the information that children receive at classes is very useful.

Up to now, more than 23,000 adolescents have asked to learn this optional discipline.

The initiative is funded by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Chisinau and the UN Population Fund.

"There is a particular need for this course, which for now is optional for health education," said Natalia Plugaru, UNFPA representative.

"This year, we have proposed for piloting the re-conceptualized course "Education for Health" in five districts. As a result all the proposals from the districts from the teachers will be introduced in the new curriculum to be implemented from 1 September 2019", said Angela Cutasevici, State Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research.

Health education is an optional course taught at the students' request.
