Dormition Fast starts tomorrow

Each year orthodox Christians participate in a fasting season from August 14-27.

The Dormition fast was established as preceding the great feasts of the Transfiguration of the Lord and of the Dormition of the Mother of God.

Traditionally, during the strict fourteen-day fast, the christians abstain from meat, dairy, fish, wine, and oil on weekdays, with some relaxation on the weekends and on the feast of the Transfiguration. The fast is relaxed for children and the elderly, or for those with a medical condition.

The Dormition fast is not as strict as the Great Fast, but it is stricter than the Apostle’s and Nativity fasts.
