37 localities have implemented optional "Health Education" discipline in schools

37 localities in Moldova have implemented in schools the optional course of study "Education for Health". The most recent school that started the community public discussions about adolescent health education is the one from Falesti Noi village, Falesti district, Radio Moldova News reports.

The Director of "Mihai Moraru" Gymnasium in Branesti (Orhei), Eugenia Zadic, says that "Health Education" is an optional but very important course of study for adolescents who can not openly discuss certain topics with their parents.

The Director added that the number of pupils studying the "Health Education" course was increasing in her gymnasium.

According to the Youth Program Analyst at the UN Population Fund, Ludmila Sârbu, the school is a good environment to teach the "Health Education" course because, for the most part, the teenagers in the educational institutions are the ones who face many problems caused by lack of information.

The "Health Education" course is taught to students on request. In the 2018-2019 study year, over 19,000 adolescents requested to learn the discipline, which accounted for only 10% of the total number of adolescents in need of such information.

The work is carried out under the project "Promoting youth health education", developed by the UN Population Fund with the support of the Dutch Embassy and in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research.

More than 330,000 adolescents aged between 10 and 19 years old, or 12% of the country's population, live in the Republic of Moldova.
