A letter of President of Romania to the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission about the situation in Moldova

President of Romania Klaus Iohannis sent a letter to the President of European Council, Donald Tusk and the President of European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, on the situation in the Republic of Moldova. Iohannis appeals that, together with EU member states (EU), it is urgently needed to identify concrete actions to put an end to the current situation through a negotiated solution in the Republic of Moldova, on the basis of EU values and principles.

"Romania, as an EU member state, having a special relationship with the Republic of Moldova, based on the Strategic Partnership for European Integration of the Republic of Moldova, and sharing a common language, history and culture, is concerned about the developments in Chisinau. In our opinion, the Republic of Moldova, an associate partner of the European Union through the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement and, at the same time, a member of the Eastern Partnership, is currently facing a serious constitutional and political crisis for its stability.

I firmly believe that the EU, as a whole, in line with the commitments made to the Republic of Moldova through the European Neighborhood Policy, as well as through the Global Strategy of the European Union, must meet the expectations of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, who have expressed their support for their country's European agenda, as confirmed in the February 2019 parliamentary elections.

I urge you, as a matter of urgency, to identify together with the Member States of the European Union concrete actions to put an end to the current situation through a negotiated solution in the Republic of Moldova, based on the values and principles of the European Union. Romania is ready to support these efforts, in full compliance with our strategic objective, which is the objective of the European Union to support the European path of the Republic of Moldova," reads the letter.
