Historical Summit: Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin, a premiere meeting in Vladivostok

Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met for the first time in history on Russky Island near Vladivostok, mediafax.ro reports.

The two hands clasped together and posed together before entering a building at the Federal University of the Far East, where the summit takes place.

According to the BBC, the Kremlin has announced that the two leaders will discuss denuclearization, and Kim Jong-un said he was seeking support after talks with the US failed. Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un met in Hanoi earlier this year without reaching an agreement.

"We have arrived in Russia bearing the warm feelings of our people and, as I have already said, I hope this visit will be a successful and useful one," Kim Jong-un said on Wednesday on Russian television after crossing the Khasan border.

"I hope that during the meeting with President Putin I will be able to discuss in a concrete way the problems related to the settlement of the situation in the Korean peninsula and the development of our bilateral relations," added Kim Jong-un.

Vladimir Putin became the sixth leader who has known Kim Jong-un since he took power in North Korea in 2011. All of these meetings took place in 2018 after the Pyongyang regime began to build its diplomatic relations.

So far, Kim Jong-un has met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, South Korean President Moon Jae-in, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, US President Donald Trump and Vietnamese President Nguyen Phu Trong.

The North Korean leader arrived in Russia on Wednesday. The train he travels reached the Hasan station, located in the east of the Primorsky region, informed a Russian official.

"Kim Jong-un descended from the train, received flowers, bread and salt. Now he could visit the Kim II Sung Museum," he added.

This is the first official visit of the North Korean leader to Russia, on the agenda being North Korea's denuclearization and economic cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang.

Kim Jong-un is accompanied by Deputy Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui, reports the KCNA agency.
