Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev announced his resignation

Nursultan Nazarbayev, the president of Kazakhstan, announced on Tuesday his resignation after nearly 30 years of leading the former Soviet republic of Central Asia, rich in natural resources, but facing increased social dissatisfaction, according to AFP, Reuters and TASS, Agerpres reports.

"I made the decision to give up the mandate of the president," announced Nazarbayev (78 years) in a statement to the nation, broadcast on one of the Republican television stations.

Until the election of the new head of the Kazakh state, the chairman of the Senate (the upper house of the legislature), Kasâm-Jomart Tokaiev, will be the president, RIA Novosti reports.
