Israel election: Exit polls show race too close to call

Benjamin Netanyahu and his main rival, Benny Gantz, have both vowed to lead Israel’s next government, despite early results and exit polls appearing to show neither had a clear path to form a coalition, The Guardian reports.

An inconclusive result from the country’s second election this year could plunge Israel further into political mayhem, with the prospect of weeks of tense political deal-making or even a third vote.

Three exit polls run by Israeli television channels, which are unofficial and often unreliable, showed neither the ruling Likud nor the opposition Blue and White would gather enough seats to secure a parliamentary majority.

At 9am local time, the official tally said 42% of votes had been counted, with Likud on 28%, and Blue and White on 27%.

Israel’s election commission said 69.4% of all eligible voters cast ballots in Tuesday’s elections, a slightly higher proportion than in a previous vote in April that was scrapped when Netanyahu failed to form a government.
