The generous weather of this period endangers bees

The hot weather of this period endangers bees. Beekeepers in the Republic of Moldova complain that the insects have come to life stupefied by the positive temperatures, and many of them have already started laying eggs. Because of this, there is a risk that the cold wave may come can affect the hives. It is estimated that almost 15% of the bee population in the Republic of Moldova will die.

Efim Cazac has 500 bee families in the village of Hristici, Soroca. According to him, this year, the metabolic process of bees is much more active, because of the high temperatures. Thus, insects consume more food, have a lower resistance, but also lower longevity. The bees have already started laying eggs.

"The bees began to make the first cleaning flight, which means that development begins. If it will be the first pollen, the bees will begin to hatch and we must monitor it for food. Higher consumption is starting for them now," said Efim Cazac, beekeeper.

Because this winter we have a difference between day and night temperatures, many of the bees risk freezing.

"Due to the high temperatures, the bees are more active. Many families today have brooded on a honeycomb or even two. If the cold days return, then the bees will not be able to maintain the temperature throughout the honeycomb space," said Andrei Zagareanu, vice president of the Beekeepers Association.

According to specialists, the honey that is now deposited by the bee can turn into a danger. Due to moisture, it can enter the fermentation and become toxic to insects.

"To take care to monitor the situation of families, their health, because the disturbance of the nest now may cause some problems in the future, I mean diseases. In the future we recommend to check the health status of the bees and, if necessary, to intervene with the needed treatments,” said Ion Maxim, president of the Beekeepers Association.

Last year, beekeepers from our country exported four thousand tons of honey to European countries.
