Over 36,000 Moldovans unemployed due to the pandemic

The state's main priority is the health of its citizens, but the restrictive measures introduced to protect the population from the new Coronavirus SARS-VOC-2 were in fact a shock to Moldova's economy. While some citizens could work remotely, most service providers did not work from home.

Due to the pandemic caused by Coronavirus, every fourth Moldovan employed has changed his working regime or even was absent from work. Data from the National Bureau of Statistics show that 163,000 employees did not work at all in the second quarter of this year. During the same period, the number of employees on unpaid leave or technical unemployment increased by 90 percent. At the same time, 30 percent of people affected by the pandemic worked fewer hours a week, and 25 percent worked from home. Teachers, as well as some civil servants and entrepreneurs, worked the most at  distance.

During this period, doctors and employees in the healthcare system had the most to work, and they were also the most exposed to the danger of infection.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, about 200,000 citizens said that due to the COVID-19 virus, their situation at work was affected. More than 36,000 Moldovans became unemployed in April-June 2020. During this period, the minimum unemployment benefit was 2,775 lei, and the fund in this regard increased almost six times, reaching 200 million lei.

In Moldova, a state of emergency was declared due to the new Coronavirus from mid-March to mid-May. Schools, kindergartens, restaurants, hotels and leisure centers, as well as a number of economic agents stopped working for several months. Restrictive measures have been gradually lifted by the authorities, but their effects show a decrease in business activities and a reduction in consumption.
