The Government of Romania offers Chisinau ten million euros for the cleaning of the river Bâc

The Government of Romania grants to Chisinau municipality a ten million euro financial aid for the cleaning of the Bâc River. Through this project, the authorities intend to reduce the vulnerability of the Bâc areas affected by climate change with a negative impact on the urban infrastructure of Chisinau municipality. In the project card, the Bâc River basin will be deepened on several sectors and will be cleaned of sludge, garbage and construction materials. It is also planned the arrangement of the riverbed and the adjacent land as a recreation area, planting trees and shrubs, alleviating alleys, cycling tracks, street lighting installation and urban furniture, IPN reports.

The Head of the General Housing and Communal Directorate, Ion Burdiumov, stated at the Mayoralty meeting that the intervention areas are: from the city of Vatra - to Chisinau Botanical Garden Street, with a length of 24.56 km and another 21,38 km in Straseni district. The first activity of the project, with a budget of 270,000 euros, involves the elaboration of an environmental impact assessment study, as well as the technical project documentation. At the same time, a plan of measures will be developed to solve the problems related to flood and drought threats as a result of climate change in the Bac riverbed.

The head of the DGLCA listed among the environmental benefits: reducing vulnerability to climate change, preventing surface water pollution in the Bâc River, rational use of green areas that reduce the effects of carbon dioxide emissions. The implementation of the project will also bring economic benefits, including the possibility of irrigation of the agricultural fields from the localities downstream of the river included in the project, the attraction of new public and private investments in the area of the consolidated bed of the river Bâc, as well as the decrease of the material damages caused by floods.

For example, in the perimeter of the streets Mihai Viteazul and Feredeului, the river bed will be set up by concrete consolidation. There will also be three water retention constructions equipped with swing shutters for the purpose of forming wider water surfaces with depths of up to 2.5 m.
