Garbage dumps, a source of water pollution

The waters of the Republic of Moldova are suffocated by the garbage thrown at random. The warning is made by environmentalists in the context in which every year, on the last Sunday of May, at national level, the Dniester Day is marked, in order to emphasize the importance of the main water basin of the country. Due to the pandemic, the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment did not organize public events this year, reports Moldova 1.

Specialists say that the largest source of pollution is the more than three thousand landfills, most of them illegal, existing on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. Environmentalists sound the alarm and say that the waters of our country are becoming, more and more dirty, muddy and carry the poisonous substances to our plate.

"All rivers in the Republic of Moldova are regularized, many dams are built, there are water accumulations that also negatively influence the condition and biodiversity, including the quality of water in these rivers," said Radu Cazacu, deputy director of "Apele Moldovei" .

Environmentalists also say that another problem for Moldovan rivers is the lack of protection strips.

"It is very important that we, as citizens, mobilize every autumn and plant as many trees as possible on the banks of the rivers. First of all, a strip of river protection fortifies the banks and, respectively, when it rains, all the soil that is on the surface does not go into the river and muddy the river," mentioned Iuliana Cataragiu, ecologist.

"For a long time, we had to focus on these issues, which I consider the most important and which refer to the construction of treatment plants for our cities and villages, to tidy up our waste and to afforest the Republic of Moldova. In this way, we will have clean water in sufficient quantity," mentioned Ina Coşeru, director of the National Environmental Center.

Since 2008, every year, on the last Sunday of May, according to a decision of the Parliament, the Dniester Day is celebrated in the Republic of Moldova. In our country, there are over 3,000 rivers.
