Number of blood donors has dropped amid the pandemic
The pandemic also affected blood donations. At the beginning of the state of emergency, blood and plasma reserves decreased considerably. Thus, the amount of blood reserved is sufficient for 40 days, and that of plasma for about three months. Doctors at the National Blood Transfusion Center (CNTS) say that the number of people coming to donate convalescent plasma used to treat patients with COVID-19 has increased recently and urges all those who have been cured of the new virus to donate blood to save more lives, Mesager reports.
At the National Blood Transfusion Center I met Eugen Breahna from Chisinau. The man says he first came here in 2007 and has been donating blood or plasma ever since. After each donation, the man says he is proud to be able to save lives. "I try to donate systematically, it seems fair to me and we have to offer help when we can do that. The specialists here are attentive and every time the process goes well ", said Eugen.
Mihail Şchiopu also came to donate blood plasma. The young man says he is excited and this is the second time he has made this gesture. "I think it's very important to do that. Since I settled in Chisinau, I set myself the goal to donate blood", said the boy.
According to doctors at the National Blood Transfusion Center, the number of blood donors has decreased since the beginning of the pandemic, and reserves have dwindled. At the same time, the need for plasma for patients with severe COVID-19 has increased significantly.
"By donating blood we manage to maintain the reserves of components. During this period, we need convalescent plasma the most, the plasma of those who have recovered from COVID-19, which is then used to treat patients with severe and extremely severe forms, ”said CNTS director Svetlana Cebotari.
To date, 664 people treated with COVID-19 have donated plasma with antibodies. Since April, the National Blood Transfusion Center has provided hospitals with 1809 doses of convalescent plasma, used in the treatment of patients with the new type of Coronavirus.
