COVID-19 is affecting more and more children

The new Coronavirus is increasingly affecting children. More than five percent of COVID-19 patients are minors. Young patients develop severe forms of the disease, including because their parents see a doctor late. Currently, more than 100 children infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus have developed complications of the disease and are hospitalized, Mesager reports.

About 60 patients are hospitalized at the Municipal Clinical Hospital for Infectious Diseases for Children in Chisinau. The number of infected people has started to grow since February. According to experts, it is very important for parents to see a doctor as soon as the first symptoms appear.

"The most affected are the extreme ages of childhood. We are talking about children up to three years old and 13-17 years old. These children develop more severe forms, more frequent pneumonia and more frequent complications. Most of them come to the doctor on the first, third day of the illness, but we also have children who come to the doctor a week later. We have more serious forms", said Ludmila Bîrcă, director of the Municipal Clinical Hospital for Contagious Diseases for Children.

The new Coronavirus can endanger, in particular, small patients suffering from other diseases and those with low immunity. Likewise, according to doctors, teenagers get over the infection more difficult from a psychological point of view. Young people show resilience and strength when they are hospitalized for up to a few weeks.

"I believe  that every doctor, in every institution, finds a few words, a few moments to encourage the patient. We know that the disease is serious, we know that there are consequences, we know that there are lethal cases and the patient comes stressed and scared ", said the doctor Diana Vlad.

According to official data, since the beginning of the pandemic, almost 13,000 children were infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
