Call: Know your HIV status, get tested and do not admit the discrimination
"Know your HIV status, get tested and do not admit discrimination." This is the call of the public authorities launched by the World HIV / AIDS Day, marked annually on the first day of December. Thus, the disease detected in the last century continues to be a discriminatory factor in society, and HIV-positive people are stigmatized and isolated, reports Moldova 1.
"Moldova is the beneficiary, from 2021 to 2023, of financial means provided in the form of a grant by the global fund and which will be used to strengthen the diagnostic capacity of people, but also to prevent the spread of HIV infection, early diagnosis of children born of HIV-infected women," said the Minister of Health, Labor and Social Protection, Viorica Dumbrăveanu.
"More than 26 million people around the world receive antiretroviral treatment that helps keep people healthy and the virus from spreading. In the Republic of Moldova, about seven thousand people benefit from this treatment. UNAIDS insists on respecting human rights, on ensuring gender equality, but also on reducing stigma and discrimination," said UNAIDS Moldova representative Svetlana Plămădeală.
According to official statistics, about 900 people are positively tested annually in the Republic of Moldova.
"The sustainability of prophylaxis services remains a challenge, which despite the fact that the authorities are trying to provide them, still remain a deficit. It is important for the person to be aware that HIV infection is a problem that affects us all. It is important to take an interest in our health and to be tested for the virus," said the representative of the "Positive Initiative" Association, Ruslan Poverga.
Worldwide, more than 77 million people are living with HIV, and 35.4 million have died of AIDS-related diseases. In our country, so far, about 14,000 people have been diagnosed with this virus, of which 135 are children. To date, five national HIV prevention and control programs have been implemented in Moldova among several risk groups.
