30 patients with multiple sclerosis are registered annually in Moldova

Every year, 30 new patients with multiple sclerosis are registered in Moldova. It is the most common cause of disability among trauma-free conditions in young patients around the world. If proper treatment is not given in time, then less than ten years after the onset of the disease, 50 percent of patients become disabled. Every year, on May 30, is World Multiple Sclerosis Day, when more than 70 countries organize various activities to inform the population about this disease, which, from year to year, affects more and more people, reports Moldova 1.

Natalia Mihailiuc suffers from multiple sclerosis. She says it all started 13 years ago, when in a weekend she woke up with numb hands and feet, didn't pay attention to her symptoms, and five months later she realized she couldn't use her foot. Right. Natalia then decided to turn to specialists at the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery. Following the consultations, the doctors established her diagnosis.

According to doctors, in the first ten years after diagnosis, half of the patients become disabled because they do not receive the appropriate treatment in time.

"The most common symptoms are visual disturbances, it can be doubling of objects, balance disorders, dizziness, instability when walking, the more symptoms are added, this should already be an alarm," said Olesea Odainic, head of the Neurosurgery Department.

The number of Moldovans suffering from this disease is increasing, but the detection rate has also increased recently, doctors say. The modern method of diagnosis is magnetic resonance imaging.

Treatment for chronic neurological disease, which affects the central nervous system, is provided entirely by the state.

"These patients benefit from treatments, regular hospitalizations, both in our institution and in other institutions in the country," says Grigore Zapuhlîh, director of the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery.

Official data show that approximately 1,300 patients with multiple sclerosis live in the Republic of Moldova. Worldwide, the number of people diagnosed with this disease exceeds 2.3 million.
