A protective dam is being built at Comrat

Eight families from the Gagauz autonomy were left homeless following the floods at the end of September, and another 45 homes were damaged. Currently, the workers are involved in removing the sludge, cleaning the Ialpug riverbed and building a protective dam in the city of Comrat, Moldova 1 reports.

A neighborhood in Comrat was flooded twice, the first time in July and the second time in late September. After heavy rains on September 29, the whole area was flooded. Water entered courtyards, basements and gardens. In some households, the torrent of water tore open the gates. Following the disaster, eight houses were destroyed and 18 are in need of major repairs.

Residents of Comrat have not yet recovered from the latest floods. They fear the plague could repeat itself.

Local authorities are working to remove the sludge and deepen the drainage channel.

"The vehicles work without rest days near the Ialpug River. We do not have much time, every rain is a great danger. This year, people have suffered twice from floods. It is very difficult for them," said the mayor of Comrat, Gheroghe Sarî.

The damage caused by the rains in Gagauzia's autonomy exceeds nine million lei. The Commission for Exceptional Situations allocated two million 62 thousand lei to the Executive Committee of ATU Gagauzia for the liquidation of the consequences caused by the rains. The money will cover damage to homeowners whose homes need to be demolished or have been partially damaged by the floods. In addition, the Government has allocated 1.8 million lei from the reserve fund, for the cleaning of the Ialpug riverbed and the construction of a protection dam in the city of Comrat.
