Peter Michalko: We will continue to support Gagauz Autonomy

Gagauz Autonomy will continue to benefit from financial assistance from the European Union (EU), said the EU ambassador to Moldova, Peter Michalko. He had several meetings in Comrat with the leadership of the autonomy, visited the Tourist Information Center, the University and several companies that are developing with European support. Bashcan Irina Vlah was grateful, noting that the inhabitants of the region already feel the changes, reports Mesager.

"We are glad that together we have been able to implement several projects, which have allowed the settlements in the region to carry out priority projects for people. We will continue to offer you our support at different levels so that people can feel the practical benefits and improve their lives", said Ambassador Peter Michalko.

"Starting with  2016, the EU has been very active in the area of autonomy: infrastructure development in each locality, support for the media, non-governmental sector, youth programs. Residents of the region have already felt the good changes. Thanks to these programs, we create jobs, there is support for small businesses”, said Irina Vlah.

“These projects are open and allow young people to participate in them. They should  stay home and find work, we must develop the autonomy, the whole country together. There are many projects, it is important for them to be implemented first and foremost in the rural area, because the town halls in the villages are not able to develop infrastructure projects by themselves”, said Vladimir Cîssa, president of the People's Assembly of Gagauzia.

Projects totaling 6.5 million euros were implemented through SARD Program in the Autonomous Region of Gagauzia and in the Taraclia district, during the years 2016-2018,. With the assistance of the EU, 63 entrepreneurs developed businesses, generating over 180 jobs, and new services and quality products appeared on the local market. Currently, another European program is being implemented in the region - Support for local authorities in the Gagauzia UTA, with a budget of 500 thousand euros.
