The locals from Rubelniţa want the village library to be reopened

Libraries have been and always will be the institutions that await their readers with open doors. Not all localities in the Republic of Moldova have such a space. This is also the case of the village of Rubelniţa in Soroca, where people have not had access to books from their local library for almost ten years. And this is because improperly cared for, the books presented a danger for employees, but also for readers, and in 2011, the Hall decided that all books should be stored in the house of culture, reports Moldova 1.

The book fund of the library from Rubleniţa has 12,000 copies in Cyrillic spelling, as well as in Romanian. Whole volumes are dusty, damp, in a small warehouse. Ever since the library was closed, rarely has anyone opened the door, and an unbearable smell lingers in the room.

"Unfortunately, there are still good books that someone uses, they are looking for," says the director of the house of culture, Valeriu Petcu.

Locals say that during a pandemic, many of them would browse a book or a magazine.

According to local authorities, the library was closed due to inadequate care of books, especially old ones, but also poor ventilation of the room.

"They were the old books and no one wanted to work with them, because there were bacteria there and the allergy to the last librarian started. There is no such a function now. We have to open a new position, but we don't have space," declared the mayor Vitalie Munteanu.

At the same time, the officials of the Culture Department from Soroca consider that the library should be more than a place to borrow books, but also a space for socializing, educating and adapting readers to new technologies.

The mayor of Rubleniţa village says that by the summer a new block of the school in the village will be put into operation and, most likely, the old one will be transformed into a library.
