25 years of partnership between the Republic of Moldova and the Council of Europe

Today, July 13, the Republic of Moldova marks 25 years of accession to the Council of Europe (CoE), which became a member of the CoE on July 13, 1995. According to the CoE Statute, any state in Europe can become a member of the CoE, if it accepts the rule of law and by virtue of which each person under its jurisdiction must enjoy fundamental human rights and freedoms and is committed to cooperating sincerely and effectively in achieving the goals of the CoE.

The Republic of Moldova signed, in 1995, in Strasbourg, the documents of accession to the Council of Europe, and thus became the 36th member of the organization and took the first step towards integration into the European value space. On the same day, the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms was signed.

"During this time, the Republic of Moldova has ratified 92 Council of Europe conventions, which were a strong impetus for adjusting national legislation to European standards and creating new democratic institutions, as well as the qualitative influence of the lives of our citizens (...) I reiterate the importance of maintaining pro-active cooperation with the Council of Europe and reaffirm our firm commitment to general human values. Our priority objective remains to bring the national legal framework in line with European standards and its implementation, including the implementation of democratic and social reforms at an accelerated pace," mentioned the president Igor Dodon.

"It is a good time for reflection and to remind and reaffirm the aspirations of the young republic at the time of accession - to become a state with strong democratic institutions, based on the rule of law and respect for fundamental human rights. This path was marked by the promotion of the standards of the rule of law, democracy and human rights, institutions were created and institutional capacities were developed, destinies were influenced and we all felt a different level of freedom," the message of Prime Minister Ion Chicu reads.

In this context, the National Library hosts, between July 13 and August 13, the exhibition entitled "The Republic of Moldova in the family of the Council of Europe: Browsing pages of contemporary history."

The exhibition presents works related to the history and main currents of activity of the Council of Europe, publications, reports and expertise directly targeting the Republic of Moldova, the action plan on supporting democratic reforms in Moldova, as well as joint programs and projects within the CoE Partnership. - EU for Moldova etc.

At the same time, the exhibition includes publications that reflect the activity and experience gained by the Council of Europe in consolidating and sharing common European values: human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

A special place in the exhibition is reserved for donations of recent Council of Europe publications provided by the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Moldova to the Council of Europe and by the CoE office in Chisinau.
