EU response to events in Parliament

The vote took place in a way that does not follow the necessary parliamentary procedures - that is the reaction of the European Union (EU) on voting on legislative projects at yesterday's sitting of Parliament. According to the EU, "voting was supported by people identified as involved in corruption and bank fraud in 2014, and this also runs the risk that the legislation could serve private interests."

These legislative proposals were submitted only two weeks after the people of the Republic of Moldova elected a new president. The elections took place in anticipation of the future president being able to exercise his functions according to the Constitution on the basis of which he was elected. It is therefore essential that any changes to these presidential functions and powers comply with the necessary, legally required procedures, including democratic scrutiny,” the EU said.

It also states that "The EU expects all decision-makers in the Republic of Moldova, an EU partner country, to respect the rule of law and guarantee democracy, in line with the expectations of the people and the essential principles of our ambitious EU Association Agreement - Republic of Moldova.

"The European Union's partnership with the Republic of Moldova will remain focused on providing tangible benefits to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova," reads the EU message.

It should be mentioned that, during the December 3 sitting of the Parliament, the deputies of PSRM and of the Parliamentary Platform "For Moldova" voted several bills, without being submitted to the debates in the plenary. And, the deputies of the DA Platform blocked the rostrum of the Parliament, after no proposal submitted by them met the required number of votes.
