Maia Sandu: I cannot appoint a prime minister in the situation of a stolen country

President Maia Sandu has hinted that she does not intend to issue a decree appointing a new candidate for prime minister and that she is awaiting the Constitutional Court's decision and is relying heavily on consultations with civil society experts to overcome the political stalemate. In the opinion of the head of state, the optimal solution would be the early parliamentary elections, because "it is what the citizens want", and "the current Parliament is part of the oligarchic system". The statements were made today on Radio Moldova, in a special edition.

"I cannot appoint a prime minister who will allow the perpetuation of this situation in which the country is stolen. In this parliamentary majority, there are people involved in the biggest corruption schemes that this country has ever suffered," said the head of state. Maia Sandu added that "it would not be about a specific candidacy for the position of prime minister" after she was asked if Andrei Nastase would not be the right candidate to lead the government either.

The president of the country has indicated that he has a leading position in this regard and that the optimal and favorable solution, first of all for the citizens, would be the early parliamentary elections.

"It is the choice of the citizens and how they will choose such a government they will have. But it is their right and it is what they demand and it is what all the political parties have promised," Maia Sandu underlined.

Regarding the prospect of a referendum, Maia Sandu said that it is not known if this will be achieved. "We have a few weeks ahead of us to discuss with civil society and constitutional experts and we will have the decision of the Constitutional Court," the country's president said.

Asked about the requirement submitted by the PSRM leader, Igor Dodon, regarding the appointment of Mariana Durleşteanu as a candidate for prime minister, Maia Sandu mentioned that "Igor Dodon is an inconsistent man who says one today and says another tomorrow" recalling the Socialists leader's promise to support the idea of holding early parliamentary elections no later than this autumn.

Maia Sandu also said that since she has been in charge of the state, she has talked to Igor Dodon only during the political consultations with the parliamentary factions.
