Romania's National Day, marked in a narrow way

In a small way, Romanians everywhere today celebrate the National Day and the 102nd anniversary of the Great Union of 1918, without parties, parades and traditional food, reports Moldova 1.

Even the parade at the Arc de Triomphe in Bucharest and Alba Iulia was reduced to a ceremony of only 30 minutes, attended by only a few officials.

This year, most of the events are dedicated to doctors fighting on the front of the pandemic.

As soon as President Klaus Iohannis arrived in the Arc de Triomphe Square, where no more than 400 people were present, the Romanian national anthem was sung. After that, the leader from Cotroceni laid a wreath and a moment of silence was held in memory of the Romanian heroes who fell on the battlefields, but also for the victims of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The event was not open to the public. If every year the sidewalks were filled with people, today not even a soldier paraded, even if about 150 soldiers were present at the Arc de Triomphe. The fighting technique was not exposed either. And the few guests, called to attend the festivities, especially medical and diplomatic personnel, watched the moment from an official tribune, with the obligation to respect the safety distance and to wear protective masks.

In the afternoon, at the Cotroceni Palace, President Klaus Iohannis will decorate civilian personalities who contributed to the management of the COVID-19 epidemic. Similar ceremonies will be organized in the country, especially in Alba Iulia. The city of the Union is quarantined until midnight. The Public Health Directorate did not request an extension of this measure.
