Poland's incumbent president, winner at the limit according to the latest poll

Poland's incumbent President Andrzej Duda is set to win the Polish presidential election by 51 percent of the vote, according to the latest Ipsos poll released on Sunday night, with a margin of one percentage point, dpa reported, quoted by Agerpres.

Duda's rival, Rafal Trzaskowski, the Liberal mayor of Warsaw, secured 49 percent of the vote, according to the latest Ipsos figures.

This latest poll is based on official results from 450 polling stations and exit polls from another 50.

An earlier poll based exclusively on exit polls from the same 500 polling stations showed Duda leading the way, with 50.4 percent of the vote compared to 49.6 percent for Trzaskowski.

The current president quickly claimed victory on Sunday night, although official results are not expected until Monday at the earliest.

"Winning the presidential election with a turnout of 70% is incredible. I am impressed," said Andrzej Duda during an election rally in Pultusk, about 60 kilometers north of Warsaw.

Duda's likely victory would mean that the ruling National Conservative Law and Justice Party (PiS) and its leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski could consolidate their power until at least the 2023 parliamentary election.

His re-election would be crucial for the PiS, which is currently not in charge of a parliamentary majority needed to reject a presidential veto. An opposition party president could use the veto to block legislation.

Ahead of the election, opponents of Duda and the PiS government expressed fear that a second presidential term could encourage PiS to annihilate media, local court and government freedoms, making the regime increasingly autocratic.

But on election night, the incumbent president adopted a conciliatory tone, inviting Rafal Trzaskowski to the presidential palace.
