The death toll from the earthquake in Turkey is increasing

As a result of the powerful earthquake that occurred in eastern Turkey on Friday, 31 people were killed, according to a new report announced Sunday by authorities, quoted by AFP and news.ro.

The number of people injured in the provinces of Elazig and Malatya amounts to 1,607, according to the Government Agency for Disaster Situations (AFAD). The earthquake occurred on Friday, at 17:55 GMT in the province of Elazig. USGS Institute measured a 6.5-magnitude earthquake.

Rescuers continued Sunday morning rescue works in search of survivors in downtown Elazig.

According to AFAD, 45 people were found alive in rubble on Friday.

Almost 80 buildings collapsed in Elazig and Malatya, and 645 inhabitants were badly damaged, according to the same source.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday went to the two disaster-stricken provinces, saying that "the necessary measures will be taken immediately so that no one is left homeless."

A 6.5-earthquake of occurred on Friday in eastern Turkey. Hundreds of rescue teams were mobilized to that province.
