Beirut: Violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement

Violent clashes took place on Thursday night between anti-government demonstrators and law enforcement, near the Parliament building in Beirut, reports BBC, quoted by news.ro.

Law enforcement forces fired tear gas at dozens of people gathered to show their anger over Tuesday night's blast that killed at least 137 people and injured about 5,000.

Officials said it was caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate that had been improperly stored since 2013 in a port depot.

The Lebanese believe the government has been negligent and hold it responsible for the blast that left hundreds of thousands homeless.

The explosion on Tuesday night destroyed entire neighborhoods. Dozens of people are still missing. Rescue teams are continuing the search, while hospitals are overcrowded.

The Lebanese state news agency wrote that 16 people were detained in the investigation announced by the Government after the disaster.

In the past two days, two officials have resigned, MP Marwan Hamadeh on Wednesday and Lebanese Ambassador to Jordan Tracy Chamoun on Thursday. They said that this catastrophe shows the need to change leadership.

On Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron visited the city and promised substantial aid, but with one condition - a "profound change" from the authorities. He also called for an international investigation into the disaster.
