WHO warning: Record increase in COVID-19 cases

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported a record increase in the number of cases of Coronavirus globally on Sunday. This, given that in 24 hours over 230,000 cases have been confirmed globally, writes digi24.ro.

Global Coronavirus cases are approaching 13 million, according to Johns Hopkins University statistics aggregator.

In these circumstances, the WHO warned that the affected countries should consider new restrictions, after the relaxation of the last two months led to the aggravation of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Many states manage to control outbreaks and quarantine growth in limited geographical areas of small regions to control the spread of the disease. I think it's a big deal. States can and should control the disease through these measures. We all want to prevent countries from returning to total closure. Nobody wants that, but there are situations where it's the only option," said Michael Ryan, WHO's director of emergency programs.

The largest increases were in the United States, Brazil, India and South Africa. Florida is the new epicenter of the pandemic, more than 15,000 cases have been detected in recent hours. In Texas, hospitals work with the military to deal with the huge number of people who want to be tested. Intensive care units are also overwhelmed. At least 26 federal states have abandoned their plans for reopening and economic recovery, Moldova 1 reports.

Europe seems to be on a downward slope, especially in the west. Bulgaria, despite a growing number of infections, has decided to open nightclubs today.

In France, however, the discos will remain closed until September, which displeased the owners, so yesterday they organized a massive protest in front of the Ministry of Health. At the same time, the Paris authorities announced that they will test visitors from countries at risk.

In many tourist resorts in Austria, the mask has become mandatory after dark due to the increasing number of cases. Those who do not have a mask risk a fine of 25 euros.

However, the authorities of the region of Catalonia, in the north-east of Spain, have ordered the re-entry into home isolation of the inhabitants of the area located around the city of Lerida, due to the strong increase of the number of infections with the new Coronavirus.

In the UK, more than 200 vegetable farm workers have been isolated after 73 of them tested positive for COVID-19. The employees lived in mobile homes belonging to the farm. The British press does not mention the nationality of workers infected with COVID-19, but it is known that farms in the region employ many Romanians.

Last night, in Bucharest, several hundred people protested against the quarantine and isolation law, which would be voted on today by the Senate plenary. Most of the protesters did not wear protective masks and did not observe physical distance. 13 of the protest participants were fined. Official data show that in Romania, Coronavirus cases are on an upward trend. The balance of diseases exceeds 32,500, and that of deaths is close to 1,900.

Ukraine has announced more than 600 new cases of Coronavirus contamination in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections to 54,000 and the death toll to about 1,400.
