Renato Usatii proposes that November 2 be declared free for teachers and students

Renato Usatii, who announced his candidacy for president from the "Our Party" party, proposes that the day after the presidential election, November 2, be declared free for teachers and students. The politician claims that he will take an approach in this regard to the Extraordinary National Commission for Public Health. Although this commission urged no polling stations to be opened inside educational institutions, Usatii says there is no other solution, at least for voters in Balti. On the other hand, the representatives of the Central Electoral Commission say that they recently discussed this subject during a meeting with the Government, and based on a decision of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research, students will return to schools after the autumn vacation on November 4, reports Moldova 1.

"The National Commission for Exceptional Situations in Public Health has decided not to have polling stations in schools, but I do not agree with that. In Bălţi, there are 58 polling stations, and over 40 polling stations are in schools. I think it should be in schools, but that would mean that after the elections, on November 2, there will be a day off for students and teachers for the school to be disinfected. We will send a request to the National Commission that November 2 be a day off for teachers and students," said Renato Usatii.

Contacted by Moldova 1, the secretary of the Central Electoral Commission, Maxim Lebedinschi, said that this issue had already been addressed during a meeting with the Government. According to the official, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research will set the students' autumn vacation until November 3, and the CEC will take additional protection measures against COVID-19.

"We had a working meeting with Prime Minister Chicu, with Minister Sharov, with Minister Dumbrăveanu and with Minister Voicu, where the aspect of public health insurance was also discussed. Until November 3, inclusive, a vacation is planned for students, which will mean that they will not be subject to risks," said Maxim Lebedinschi.

Also, in a post on Facebook, PAS deputy, Doina Gherman, claims that the recommendation of the Central Electoral Commission to urge mayors not to organize polling stations inside educational institutions, is, we quote: “an abusive, non-transparent and undemocratic decision, which will create chaos and prevent citizens from exercising their fundamental right to vote”. Doina Gherman claims that she will challenge this decision. Moreover, the deputy considers that the mayors will not be able to find specially arranged places within ten days, in order to guarantee safe voting.

On the other hand, the Minister of Education, Culture and Research, Igor Sharov, told our television station that the circular sent by the Central Electoral Commission to local public authorities is only a recommendation, and a final decision will be taken by the ministry shortly. According to the official, the solution to be proposed will take into account the needs of voters, but will not be to the detriment of children.

A few days ago, the Extraordinary National Commission for Public Health decided to extend the state of emergency until September 30. At the same time, the members of the Commission demanded to avoid the opening of polling stations inside the educational institutions.
