Smaller harvest of apples this year

In northern Moldova the harvest looks good despite unfavorable weather conditions. Soroca farmers seem optimistic about the first tons of apples harvested in recent days and are preparing for export to the European Union (EU). Estimates show a 20% decrease in apple production, up to 500 thousand tons, reports Mesager.

Farmer Vladimir Ivanov owns an orchard of 130 hectares of apples. Due to the lack of moisture, the fruits have not grown much in volume, so a good part will be used for juice.

If last year the apples from Soroca were exported to the Russian Federation and Belarus, this year they will be exported to the EU. A refrigerator with a capacity of 800 tons was built to this effect.

According to experts, this year the big losses could have been avoided by the producers who followed the production technologies.

"The agro-technical works, the protection measures were carried out on time and the lands were irrigated. In orchards that are not irrigated, the harvest will be much smaller. We are talking about the correct use of phytosanitary products ", said Iurie Fală, executive director of the" Moldova Fruct "Association.

In addition, export-oriented producers are warned that in the wake of the pandemic, external consumers have become more vigilant about what they consume.

Of the estimated harvest of over 500 thousand tons of apples, 220 tons would be preserved, and another 70 tons will be consumed by Moldovans. 200 thousand tons will be exported mainly to the CIS, Central and Eastern European markets.
