Smaller apple crop this year

This year, the apple crop will be about 500 thousand tons compared to 610 thousand - in 2019. Productivity decreased by 0.12 tons per hectare. The executive director of the Association of Fruit Producers and Exporters "Moldova Fruct", Iurie Fală, claims that the apple harvest is lower due to the dry conditions this year, but also the hail that fell in some localities, Radio Moldova reports.

"This year, apple production was negatively affected by climatic conditions. We had a very mild winter, and in some regions there was no rainfall since May 2019. In April, there were frosts of up to minus 13 degrees. I also had a severe drought. This year, we expect to have a harvest much lower than 530 thousand tons,” said Iurie Fală.

After harvesting, most Moldovan apples will reach the shelves of CIS warehouses, says the expert.

"About 200,000 tons of apples will be exported. Most exports start after the New Year, which puts a lot of pressure on producers to assimilate technologies that would allow the long-term storage of apples. The CIS market will continue to be a special export destination. This year, we also focus on Romania, where the Government pays great attention to fruit consumption in schools and preschools. We also want domestic consumption to increase," specified the executive director of the Association of Fruit Producers and Exporters "Moldova Fruct".
